Aveda sued by woman claiming severe burns from hot eyebrow wax

George B. Recile

GRETNA – A Jefferson Parish woman has filed suit against a cosmetology school for burns she claims to have received during a hair removal procedure.

Lisa M. Molay filed suit against Beauty Basics, Aveda Institute of New Orleans and American Empire Surplus Lines Insurance Company in the 24th Judicial District Court on Sept. 20. Molay claims she was having her eyebrows waxed at Aveda Institute of New Orelans when hot wax fell into her right eye and covered the right side of her face. The plaintiff alleges the incident resulted in severe injuries to her eyes, face and an aggravation of a pre-existing medical condition.

The defendant is accused of failing to protect the plaintiff from injury, failing to exercise due care, failing to avoid spilling hot wax into petitioner's eye, failing to take proper precautions to prevent the petitioner's injuries, failing to take necessary and adequate steps to avoid injury and failing to use proper safeguards.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for medical expenses, pain and suffering, mental pain and anguish, physical disability, physical disfigurement and scarring, loss of enjoyment of life, loss of wages and loss of earning capacity.

Molay is represented by Metairie-based attorney George B. Recile.

The case has been assigned to Division N Judge Hans J. Liljeberg.

Case no. 719-293.
