Jefferson Parish sued by man whose building was demolished

GRETNA – Jefferson Parish is being sued by a property owner for allegedly illegally demolishing a building on his property.

Daniel Blanchard filed suit against Jefferson Parish in the 24th Judicial District Court on Oct. 8. Blanchard claims he owns a piece or property at 322 6th St. in Jefferson where a building allegedly in violation of ordinances was demolished.

The plaintiff claims that after being deemed dangerous his building was demolished by the parish without due process or compensation. Blanchard asserts that he has routinely been cited by the parish and been denied work permits for various properties he owns.

The defendant is accused of illegally adding a 25 percent surcharge to the demolition fee, violation of the Excessive Fines Clause and punitive surcharges.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for reimbursement of fines, compensation for demolition of the property, violation notices on the plaintiff's other properties, pre-judgment trial interest, attorney's fees and court costs.

Blanchard is representing himself in the case.

The case has been assigned to Division P Judge Lee V. Faulkner.

Case no. 719-842.
