GRETNA – An Illinois-based insurance company is suing a local construction company for damages related to the failure of their roof during a hurricane.

Illinois Union Insurance Co., as subrogee of Leplace of Jefferson LP and Jefferson Place Apartments, filed suit against Jefferson Construction Services LLC and Step Construction LLC in the 24th Judicial District Court on August 26.

Illinois Union Insurance Co. claims that Jefferson Construction Services built a roof on Jefferson Place Apartments located at 6212 East Judah in Marrero. On Aug. 29, 2012 as Hurricane Isaac hit the area, the plaintiff alleges the roof system failed under strong winds that did not exceed the maximum limit for the design. Illinois Union Insurance Co. asserts that due to the roof failure severe damage was caused.

The defendant is accused of negligence, breach of contract and breach of warranty.

An unspecified amount in damages is to repair the damaged buildings.

Illinois Union Insurance Co is represented by attorney Jake P. Skaggs of Houston, Texas.

The case has been assigned to Division F Judge Michael P. Mentz.

Case no. 730-338.
