St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office sued by couple claiming auto accident with employee

GRETNA – A local law enforcement agency is being sued by a couple who claim they were in a car accident caused by a an employee of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office.

Larry Vinnett and Myrna Johns, individually and on behalf of Reginald Black, filed suit against St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office, National Fire Insurance Company of Hartford and Peter R. Tufaro in the 24th Judicial District Court on Feb. 19.

Vinnett and Johns claim that on Oct. 17, 2013, they were driving in Kenner when a car driven by Peter R. Tufaro and owned by St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office ran into the rear of their car. The plaintiffs allege that they were injured in the accident and have since undergone medical treatment.

The defendant is accused of negligently and carelessly failing to properly train and supervise the driver, allowing a reckless driver to remain on the road, failing to screen and test their driver, failing to provide systemic safety defensive driver training, failing to provide remedial training, negligently entrusting vehicle to Tufaro and negligent risk management.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for physical pain and suffering, mental anguish, disability, medical expenses, loss of enjoyment of life, bodily disability, loss of use of parts of the body, disability from engaging in recreation, property damage and loss of use of vehicle.

Vinnett and Johns is represented by Colby F. Wenck of New Orleans-based Michael T. Hingle & Associates LLC.

The case has been assigned to Division A Judge Raymond S. Steib Jr.
