Woman who claims injury after deputy allegedly ran into bus sues

GRETNA – A public bus transit passenger who claims she was injured after a local law enforcement agency officer ran his cruiser into the bus she was riding on is suing.

Janice M. Songy filed suit against Newell Normand, Sheriff of Jefferson Parish and Nicki Garnier in the 24th Judicial District Court on March 25.

Songy asserts she was a passenger aboard a bus owned by Jefferson Parish Transit  when a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office vehicle driven by Deputy Garnier improperly changed lanes and collided with them. The plaintiff alleges she was injured in the accident.

The defendant is accused of failing to see what should have been seen, failing to keep a careful lookout, failing to maintain a reasonable speed, operating his vehicle in a careless and reckless manner and improper lane usage.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for pain and suffering, mental pain and suffering, rental expenses, property damage, permanent disability, loss of consortium, loss of enjoyment of life, penalties and attorney’s fees.

Songy is represented by Edward J. Womac Jr. of Edward J. Womac Jr. & Asociates LLC of New Orleans.

The case has been assigned to Division I Judge Nancy A. Miller.
