Jefferson Parish sues natural gas supplier Atmos Energy for allegedly damaging sewer line

GRETNA – A regional natural gas supplier is being sued for allegedly digging up a sewer line in the process of installing a gas line.

Parish of Jefferson filed suit against Atmos Energy Corporation and LA Natural Gas Service in the 24th Judicial District Court on June 24.

Jefferson Parish contends that LA Natural Gas Service employees, working on behalf of, Atmos Energy damaged a sewer line in the process of digging to install a gas line located at 3744 Ames Blvd. in Marrero. The plaintiff alleges that during the placement of underground gas lines the defendants went through a sewer line. Jefferson Parish claims the damages occurred on Oct. 30, 2013 but were not discovered until Dec. 4, 2013.

The defendant is accused of failing to comply with state law, failing to keep equipment under proper control, failing to bring equipment to a stop before striking Jefferson Parish’s property, failing to inspect the premises and failing to verify existing utility locations.

Damages in the amount of $93,716.95 is sought for property damage.

Jefferson Parish is represented by W. Reed Smith of the Jefferson Parish Attorney’s Office in Gretna.

The case has been assigned to Division D Judge Scott U. Schlegel.
