Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and NOPD sued after officers allegedly strike vehicle simultaneously

GRETNA – A motorist’s auto insurer is suing after sheriff’s deputy allegedly rear-ended her and then she her car was struck in the side by a New Orleans Police Department officer riding a motorcycle.

State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, as partial subrogee of Carlen Sparks, filed suit against Cleveland R. Johnson Jr., City of New Orleans and Newell Normand, Sheriff of Jefferson Parish, in the 24th Judicial District Court on July 15.

State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company contends that its insured, Carlen Sparks, was driving her car is a safe and secure manner when a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy ran his cruiser into the rear of her vehicle. The plaintiff alleges that at the same time she was struck by a New Orleans Police Department officer on a motorcycle who ran into the side of Spark's car.

The defendants are accused of failing to maintain proper lookout, failing to see what they should have seen, failing to obey the rules of the road, failing to obey the traffic laws and failing to properly direct traffic.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for property damage.

State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company is represented by attorney James E. Broulette of Metairie.

The case has been assigned to Division C Judge June Berry Darensburg.
