GRETNA – The family a man who was allegedly punched in the face by another bar patron and died from his injuries is suing the bar where the incident occurred.

Nasheen Sharif, individually and as a representative of the estate of Adnan Anwar as natural tutrix of her minor children, filed suit against Karen’s Hot Shots Inc., J.R.’s Sports Bar & Grill, Hallmark Specialty Underwriter’s Insurance Inc., Frances C. Rayner, Aaron Ullrich and an unknown insurer in the 24th Judicial District Court.

Sharif claims that on Sept. 25, 2013 Adnan Anwar dropped his parents off at the airport around 4 a.m. and afterward went with his friend Ghanzanfar Qureshi to J.R.’s Sports Bar and Grill located at 7100 Veterans Memorial Boulevard in Metairie. The plaintiff alleges that shortly after Anwar entered the bar Ullrich began a verbal altercation with him before punching him in the jaw causing him to fall to the ground and receive injuries that he ultimately died from. Sharif contends that the bartender on duty and owner of J.R.’s Sports Bar & Grill failed to take any action to protect Anwar from criminal actions during the altercation despite being aware of the a history of violence in the establishment.

The defendant is accused of failing to implement reasonable measures to protect patrons, failing to exercise reasonable care, failing to keep premises free of hazards, maintain an unreasonable risk of harm and creating an unreasonable risk of harm.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for physical pain and suffering, mental pain and anguish and funeral expenses.

Sharif is represented by Neil F. Nazareth of New Orleans-based Martzell & Bickford APLC.

The case has been assigned to Division H Judge Glenn B. Ansardi.

Case no. 742-676.
