Woman claims longterm care facility’s negligence contributed to husband’s fall, death

By Louisiana Record reports | Jul 8, 2015

GRETNA – The wife of a deceased man is suing a long-term care facility where he allegedly suffered a fall and broke his back nearly a month before he died.

Savitri Kadan, individually and on behalf of Ranjit Kadan, filed suit against Louisiana Extended Care Hospital of Kenner LLC and Ochsner Extended Care Hospital of Kenner in the 24th Judicial District Court on May 19.

Kadan claims that on Nov. 7, 2010 her husband, Ranjit Kadan, was hospitalized for failing health after suffering a rapid loss of 18 pounds and later placed in the care of Louisiana Extended Care Hospital of Kenner. On Dec. 5, 2010 the plaintiff alleges her husband was hospitalized at the defendant’s healthcare facility when he awoke at 1:30 a.m. and pressed his call button several times to request assistance using the restroom. Kadan contends no one answered Ranjit Kadan’s calls and he attempted to make his way to the bathroom when he fell and broke his back.

In the hours prior to the fall the plaintiff alleges Ranjit Kadan had been given narcotic pain medication and sleeping pills in addition to not being administered insulin after it was discovered that his blood sugar was extremely high, which contributed to the incident. The plaintiff claims the incident led up to Ranjit Kadan’s death Dec. 28, 2010 after being administered narcotic sedatives and suffering respiratory arrest.

The defendant is accused of medical malpractice.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for physical pain and suffering, loss of mobility, disability, mental anguish, anxiety, emotional pain and suffering, wrongful death, loss of consortium, loss of love and affection, loss of companionship and loss of enjoyment of life.

Kadan is represented by Tammy M. Nick of the Slidell-based Nick Law Firm LLC.

The case has been assigned to Division G Judge E. Adrian Adams.

Case no. 749-866.
