GRETNA – The children of a deceased woman are suing a local hospital and doctors for medical malpractice after her death.

Kathy Maestri and Kurt Burgenthal, individually and on behalf of their deceased mother Dorothy Reynolds, filed suit against Oceans Behavioral Hospital of Greater New Orleans LLC, Primal Parikh M.D. and Lammico Insurance Agency Inc. in the 24th Judicial District Court on July 6.

Maestri and Burgenthal allege their mother, Reynolds, was 80-years-old and had a history of behavioral disturbances, in addition to numerous other medical diagnoses, when she was admitted to Oceans Behavioral Hospital of Greater New Orleans on Aug. 3, 2012 with dementia, behavioral problems and depression. The plaintiffs contend that on Aug. 9, 2012 their mother suffered began to suffer from diarrhea and her skin began to break down and sores began to form. Maestri and Burgenthal assert Reynolds was admitted to East Jefferson General Hospital on Aug. 15, 2012 where she stayed and was ultimately discharged on Aug. 24, 2015.

The plaintiffs claim that when Reynolds was discharged her sores did not fully heal and on Sept. 7, 2012 she was placed in hospice care and she ultimately passed away on Oct. 24, 2012.

The defendant is accused of medical malpractice.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for standard of care, physical pain, emotional stress, loss of enjoyment of life and medical expenses.

Maestri and Burgenthal are represented by attorney Lee M. Schwalben of Lake Charles.

The case has been assigned to Division M Judge Henry G. Sullivan Jr.

Case no. 751-298.
