Duferco Steel Inc. alleges cargo was damaged during transport

NEW ORLEANS – A steel company is seeking damages after its cargo was allegedly damaged during shipping.

Duferco Steel Inc. filed a lawsuit on Feb. 11 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana against the vessel Oceanprince, Red Sunrise Maritime Co. LTD, Oceanstar Management Inc. and Western Bulk Carriers over claims of breach of warranty and unseaworthiness.

Duferco Steel Inc. alleges that on Dec. 23 and Dec. 24, 2014, a shipment of 2,436 prime wire rod coils of miscellaneous size that was shipped from Odessa, Ukraine to New Orleans was damaged during the shipping process by the defendants. Duferco claims that the cargo was sold, shipped, inspected, carried, kept, discharged and delivered from the Oceanprince in a condition that was not the same as it was when it left the port of origin. The damages, it asserts, are in excess of $16,555, and has not been paid by defendants.

It is suing for damages of more than $16,555, plus interest, and the cost of suit. It is also demanding that the defendants appear in court to answer the claims and that Oceanprince be condemned and sold in satisfaction. It is represented by W. Sean O’Neil of in Houston.
