Apartment owners seek damages from tenant after fire

GRETNA – 1st Lake Properties Inc. is seeking damages following a fire allegedly caused by a tenant, as well as over claims of unpaid rent.

1st Lake Properties Inc., agents for the Breakers Apartments, filed a suit against Kiasha M. Roussell in the 24th Judicial District Court on April 13, citing breach of lease and negligence.

According to the claim, Roussell signed a lease for the period of eight months in 2015, agreeing to maintain the Metairie property in good condition. The suit states that on Sept. 13, 2015, the leased apartment suffered fire damage when the tenant allegedly left food unattended on the stove. The fire purportedly damaged a number of apartments due to the water from the sprinkler system. Additionally, the defendant allegedly failed to make a payment for the rent for the month of April .

The plaintiff is seeking $6,061.20 for damages and $1,107 for rent. It is represented by Jacob Kansas in Gretna. The case has been assigned to Division B Judge Cornelius E. Regan.
