GRETNA – A company that owns a local building that had a roofing system installed which allegedly failed during a recent hurricane is suing.
LA-Lakeway LLC filed suit against Soprema Inc. in the 24th Judicial District Court on Aug. 7.
LA-Lakeway LLC claims a building it owns at 383 N. Causeway Blvd. in Metairie that had a bitumen roof was installed by Soprema Inc. The plaintiff alleges the defendant designed, manufactured and sold flat bitumen roof components that were supposed to withstand 130 mile per hour winds and carried a 20-year warranty. LA-Lakeway LLC asserts that the roof failed during Hurricane Isaac in August 2012 despite the maximum winds not exceeding what the roof was supposed to be able to withstand. The plaintiff claims due to the roof failure its building experienced severe damage. LA-Lakeway LLC alleges that Soprema Inc. denied coverage on the warranty and refused to take any action to repair the building.
The defendant is accused of violating Louisiana product liability law and breach of contract.
An unspecified amount in damages is sought for reimbursement for property damage.
LA-Lakeway LLC is represented by Jake P. Skaggs of Houston, Texas-based Cozen and O’Connor.
The case has been assigned to Division D Judge Scott U. Schlegel.
