GRETNA – A local church is being sued by woman who alleges she was injured in a trip and fall over bricks in its parking lot.

Shirley Rubit filed suit against New Zion Baptist Church and Guideone Specialty Mutual Insurance Company in the 24th Judicial District Court on May 22.

Rubit asserts she was an invitee at the New Zion Baptist Church located at 1131 Garden Road in Marrero and as she was walking over bricks that led to the parking lot the bricks, some of which were broken, shifted and she fell to the ground. The plaintiff claims she received injuries to her right side, right eye, back, neck, shoulders and breasts in the incident.

The defendant is accused of failing to maintain their premises in a safe condition, failing to have in effect adequate inspection and repair procedures, maintaining an inherently dangerous and defective condition, permitting an unsafe condition and failing to warn invitees of the defective or unsafe conditions.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for mental anguish and medical expenses.

Rubit is represented by Steven M. Koenig of New Orleans-based Valteau, Harris, Koenig & Mayer.

The case has been assigned to Division A Judge Raymond S. Steib Jr.

Case no. 738-792.
