'Old dog' alleges age discrimination at job he was fired from

Federal Court

BATON ROUGE -- Paul Copeland filed complaint on July 13 in East Baton Rouge Parish District Court against Becton, Dickinson and Company for unlawful termination.

According to the complaint, Copeland began as an employee for Becton, Dickinson and Company in July 2011 as the Southeast District Manager. Copeland alleges experiencing age discrimination while working for the company as co-workers would call him an "old dog" and make other comments about his age.

In early January 2021, Copeland communicated to his supervisors that their comments regarding his age were unwelcome and/or offensive but was terminated from his employment, the suit says.

At that time, the defendant identified a pretextual reason that Petitioner had promoted selling Arctic Sun for off-label uses and had allegedly violated a non-existent policy, the suit says. Copeland alleges his termination was in retaliation to his complaint.

Copeland seeks liquidated damages, attorney's fees and cost of suit. Copeland is represented by Jill L. Craft.

The defendant removed the case to Baton Rouge federal court on Aug. 6.
