Diabetic patient who had leg amputated sues doctor claiming medical malpractice

Emergency

GRETNA – A diabetic patient who had to undergo an amputation is suing a doctor he claims could have saved his leg.

Michael David Howard filed suit against Dr. Kathleen Williams, Jefferson Parish Human Services Authority and Jeffcare-Weft Jefferson in the 24th Judicial District Court on May 7.

Howard asserts on January 2014 he went to the Jeffcare-Weft Jefferson in Marrero complaining of pain and discomfort in his foot. The plaintiff claims he notified the defendants he was a diabetic, but that Williams told him the foot pain was insignificant and only needed a follow-up with a wound car doctor. However, Howard alleges a few days later he went to the emergency department at Ochsner Medical Center-West Bank who told him they would have to amputate his leg below the knee. The plaintiff contends he underwent surgery to amputate his leg on Jan. 22, 2014 and was told that if Williams had discovered the problem he may not have needed the amputation.

The defendant is accused of medical malpractice.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for physical pain and suffering, mental pain and suffering, medical expenses, mental anguish, grief, emotional distress and loss of enjoyment of life.

Howard is represented by Brent P. Frederick of Baton Rouge-based Frederick & Beckers LLC.

The case has been assigned to Division K Judge Ellen S. Kovach.

Case no. 749-612.
