Barbier orders security zone around Deepwater Horizon wreckage site

Barbier

U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier of the Eastern District of Louisiana has granted a Justice Department motion to establish a security zone around the wreckage site of the Deepwater Horizon well.

A DOJ press release states that the order establishes "a security zone extending 750 feet in all directions from the mobile offshore drilling unit Deepwater Horizon wreckage site and its debris field."

Barbier presides over Multi District Litigation involving BP oil spill suits.

The order states that the court finds it "in the interest of the public to protect the search area and any evidence located in the area against intentional or unintentional loss."

The security zone will remain in place until Oct. 8, 2011, with an option to renew for good cause.
