Installation of defective bleeder valve in UNO’s Child Care Center leads to lawsuit

NEW ORLEANS – A mechanical contractor is being sued after a pipe it installed damaged the pump room and several adjoining rooms in a local university's child care center.

The State of Louisiana through the Office of the Governor Division of Administration and Office of Risk Management filed a lawsuit against Verges Mechanical Contractors LLC and CNA Insurance Co. in the Orleans Parish Central District Court on Dec. 5. The plaintiff claims it has incurred damages in the amount of $5,062.30 for repairs of pump room, several adjoining rooms and the electronic controls of the water chiller system inside the pump room. The plaintiff further asserts the repairs are a result of the defendants installing a defective bleeder valve.

The defendant is accused of failing to recognize the defect in the valve prior to installation and failure to properly install the valve.

An unspecified amount is sought for all damages found reasonable in the premises.

The plaintiff is represented by Baton Rouge-based Assistant Attorney General Susan Lafaye.

This case has been assigned to Division H Judge Michael G. Bagneris.

Case no. 2012-11317.
