GRETNA – A man who allegedly destroyed a new police cruiser after running into it is being sued, along with his insurer, for the full amount of the vehicle.
Newell Normand, in his capacity as Sheriff for the Parish of Jefferson, filed suit against Miguel A. Lopez in the 24th Judicial District Court on Oct. 16.
Normand claims that Lopez was operating a 2006 Nissan pickup on Oct. 28, 2012 when he crashed into a 2013 Ford Explorer owned by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and being operated by Deputy David Dalton. The plaintiff alleges that the accident was due to the defendant’s negligence and that since it has occurred the Sheriff’s Office has not received full payment for the damages.
The defendant is accused of disregarding a stoplight, traveling at an excessive rate of speed and failing to see what should have been seen.
Damages in the amount of $29,159 are sought by the plaintiff.
Normand is represented by attorney Brad G. Theard of Metairie.
The case has been assigned to Division P Judge Lee V. Faulkner Jr.
Case no. 732-062.
