Hospital, doctor sued over death of child

2557912 1

NEW ORLEANS – A medical malpractice suit has been filed against State of Louisiana through the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and Dr. Shannon McGuire.

Plaintiffs Raymond and Julie Steiner filed suit in the Orleans Parish Civil District Court on Dec. 2, 2013, claiming their son received improper treatment for a diagnosis of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM). He died as a result, the suit says.

The plaintiff alleges that an autopsy revealed cause of death to be necrotizing pancreatitis and hemorrahagic pancreatitis, possibly caused by McGuire’s treatment and that the diagnosis of ADEM was found to be incorrect by the autopsy.

McGuire is accused of failing to obtain a thorough history and failing to evaluate the progression of the child's clinical symptoms. Because McGuire failed to develop an appropriate differential diagnosis, failed to clinically correlate the child's radiology studies, and failed to adequately monitor blood chemistries, the Steiners assert their son died due to this incorrect treatment and not ADEM, as diagnosed.

The Steiners are represented by attorney Todd Townsley of the Lake Charles-based The Townsley Law Firm.

Case has been assigned to Division J Judge Paula Brown.

Case No. 2013-11186.
