NEW ORLEANS – The family of a crane operator who was struck by falling debris and killed in 2012 alleges his death was caused by the negligence of the crane equipment company and is suing for damages.
Kelly Billiot Naquin, Brittany Naquin and Darrel J. Naquin filed suit against Covington based Baker Equipment Company LLC and Baker Pile Driving & Site Work LLC in the Orleans Parish Civil District Court on Dec. 18, 2013.
The family of the deceased, Darrell Edward Naquin, assert Naquin was operating a crane with Lou Gioe’s Truck Service Inc., on Dec. 19, 2012, to demolish Methodist Hospital in New Orleans.
During the demolition, Naquin was allegedly caught in a dangerous shower of debris and died from blunt force injuries.
The plaintiffs accuse Baker of negligence, claiming the company had full knowledge the crane would be used for demolition, but failed to properly equip and inspect the crane to make it safe and failed to provide safety equipment.
The Naquins are seeking unspecified damages for fear of death, pre-death physical and mental anguish, loss of love and services, funeral expenses and their claim of wrongful death and survival action.
The Naquins are represented by Mary Ann Hand of Gutierrez & Hand of Chalmette.
The case has been assigned to Division G Judge Robin M. Giarrusso.
