GRETNA – A local landlord is being sued by a tenant who claims she fell on a set of icy stairs after an ice storm hit the area.

Gail Stone filed suit against Lakes of Chateau North LLC and Liberty Surplus Insurance Company in the 24th Judicial District Court on June 2.

Stone asserts that on Jan. 24 she was a tenant at Lakes of Chateau North located at 3700 Loyola Drive in Kenner when she slipped and fell on an icy set of stairs. The plaintiff claims that when she landed on the ground she severely injured her shoulder and other parts of her body. Stone alleges that before the incident the staircase had been exposed to the elements during an ice storm.

The defendant is accused of failing to inspect the premises, failing to provide safe conditions on the premises as required by state law, failing to clear the stairway of ice, failing to properly inspect the stairwells for slippery substances and failing to properly light the stairwell.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for mental anguish, physical pain and suffering, emanational distress, impairment of the ability to enjoy life’s pleasures, medical expenses and loss of earning capacity.

Stone is represented by attorney Laurence Cohen of New Orleans.

The case has been assigned to Division A Judge Raymond S. Steib Jr.

Case no. 738-996.
