NEW ORLEANS – A woman is suing the LSU Health Sciences Center for allegedly re-filling her pain medication in a negligent manner causing her to suffer a heart attack.
Geraldine Eugene filed suit against the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans in the New Orleans Parish Central District Court.
Eugene claims that on June 15, 2010 she went to a Multi Specialty Clinic operated by LSU Medical School's Health Care System. The facility is located on Napoleon Avenue in Orleans Parish and staffed by the LSU Health Sciences Center of New Orleans.
The plaintiff visited the clinic to have her Fentanyl pain pump filled with medication, says the suit. Eugene asserts that Dr. Amparo Gutierrez and other staff present at the clinic attempted to properly complete this treatment without success.
Eugene alleges that Dr. Gutierrez negligently injected the pain medication into her subcutaneous tissue rather than inserting it into the pump properly.
The suit alleges that Eugene suffered a cardiac arrest as a result of a narcotic overdose. The plaintiff asserts that she was brought to an emergency room, admitted to ICU, and then remained hospitalized for approximately 10 days.
According to the complaint, Eugene was a kidney transplant recipient in addition to other pre-existing medical conditions. The pain pump event is alleged to have aggravated a cardiac condition, leaving the plaintiff unable to function without constant oxygen intake.
The defendant is accused of medical negligence.
The plaintiff seeks an unknown amount in damages for past, present, and future physical and emotional pain and suffering, medical expenses and all court costs and legal interest.
