GRETNA – A woman is suing her doctor and clinic after she was allegedly prescribed medicine she was allergic to and suffered a reaction that put her in the hospital.

Denise Childers filed suit against Kweli Amusa M.D. and Pelican State Outpatient Center in the 24th Judicial District Court on July 21.

Childers claims she visited Amusa at Pelican State Outpatient Center located at 1525 Dickory Ave. in Harahan complaining of a cough and head congestion. She claims she reported her history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. The plaintiff further claims she also told the plaintiffs that she was allergic to hyrdocodone, which was backed up by her prior medical records. Childers asserts that Amusa prescribed to her a cough syrup containing hyrdocodone and subsequently she suffered anaphylaxis and respiratory distress and had to be hospitalized.

The plaintiff alleges that due to the incident she continues to suffer lung and other injuries.

The defendant is accused of medical malpractice.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for physical pain and suffering, emotional pain and suffering, disfigurement, loss of enjoyment of life, exacerbation of her disability, medical expenses and loss of earning capacity.

Childers is represented by David A. Bowling of New Orleans-based The Bowling Law Firm.

The case has been assigned to Division I Judge Nancy A. Miller.

Case no. 740-503.
