GRETNA – A local construction company is being sued after one of its barges allegedly came loose in the Intracoastal Canal and damaged a commercial shrimping vessel.

Edward Thibodeaux filed suit against Grillot Construction LLC and Bryncom-Grillot LLC in the 24th Judicial District Court on Dec. 10.

Thibodeaux, a commercial shrimper, contends that on Dec. 12, 2013 a barge owned by Grillot Construction LLC and Bryncom-Grillot LLC came adrift in the Intracoastal Canal in Lafitte and collided with his boat. The plaintiff asserts that the boat he uses for his profession as a shrimper was destroyed in the accident and he was unable to work afterward.

The defendant is accused of failing to maintain proper control of barge, failing to maintain a proper lookout, operating a barge in a reckless and negligent manner and violating state and parish laws.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for full proper damages, inconvenience, lost wages, lost benefits and loss of earning capacity.

Thibodeaux is represented by J. Benjamin Avin of the New Orleans-based Irpino Law Firm.

The case has been assigned to Division N Judge Stephen D. Enright Jr.

Case no. 745-034.
