Medical center sues Jefferson Parish over lack of insurance coverage for employee

GRETNA – The Jefferson Parish government is being sued by a local medical center seeking $34,000 in unpaid medical services incurred by a government worker.

Jefferson Ambulatory Surgery Center LLC filed suit against Newell Normand, individually and in his capacity as sheriff and ex-officio tax collector for the Parish of Jefferson, in the 24th Judicial District Court on Jan. 20.

Jefferson Ambulatory Surgery Center that before providing the treatment it reached out to the defendant which ensured the plaintiff that medical costs would be covered. However, Jefferson Ambulatory Surgery Center contends it was later paid for the treatment at a rate significantly below what was quoted.

The defendant is accused of breach of contract.

Damages in the amount of $34,283.85 plus attorney’s fees and court costs are sought by the plaintiff.

Jefferson Ambulatory Surgery Center is represented by attorney Paula A. Lea Jr. of Covington.

The case has been assigned to Division H Judge Glenn B. Ansardi.
