Captain sues employer claiming injuries in offshore workplace accident

Spagnoletti

A Terrebonne Parish man is suing his employer, alleging negligence in a 2013 workplace incident.

Stanley Hotard Jr. filed a lawsuit March 24 in U.S District Court Eastern District of Louisiana against Graestone Logistics and KBK Marine.

According to the complaint, on June 21, 2013, Hotard, employed by the defendants as a captain and crew member of the Shelby Jean, was injured when he slipped and fell on steps lacking a non-skid surface.

The suit states that Hotard sustained serious and debilitating injuries as a result of the defendants’ negligence, noting it was the defendants’ responsibility to maintain the vessel and equipment in a reasonably secure manner and state of repair. The suit alleges failure to take precautions for the plaintiff’s safety, warn him of existing hazards and provide a safe workplace.

The complaint alleges negligence, unseaworthiness of the vessel, and medical expenses.

Hotard seeks compensatory and punitive damages, plus attorney fees, expenses and costs. He is represented by attorneys Walter Naquin Jr. of Thibodaux, and Marcus Spagnoletti of Spagnoletti & Co. in Houston.

U.S. District Court Eastern District of Louisiana: 2:15-cv-00904-SM-JCW.
