NEW ORLEANS – A deckhand is suing Marquette Transportation for injuries he allegedly suffered on the job.
Clint A. Coffey filed a lawsuit Dec. 1 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana against Marquette Transportation Co. LLC, alleging violations of the Jones Act, a 1920 maritime law governing sailors’ compensation, and negligence to maintain a safe working environment.
According to the complaint, Coffey served as a senior deckhand aboard the marine vessel Kelly Rae Erickson, earning approximately $32,000 annually, plus benefits. On Feb. 19 as he attempted to step from one barge to another, Coffey slipped on an icy deck, suffering severe and disabling permanent injuries to his left shoulder, back and other areas.
Coffey seeks punitive and compensatory damages to be determined at trial, as well as medical expenses. He is represented by attorney Paul M. Sterbcow and Beth E. Abramson of Lewis, Kullman, Sterbcow & Abramson of New Orleans.
