NEW ORLEANS – A Tylertown, Mississippi man is suing Unum Life Insurance in a dispute surrounding a disability claim.

Corey Mayfield filed a lawsuit Oct. 29 in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana against Unum Life Insurance Co. of America, alleging breach of contract.

According to the complaint, Mayfield has been unable to work since Dec. 24, 2014, due to a work-related injury that occurred Nov. 4, 2013. Although the defendant has denied Mayfield’s claim for long-term disability, he claims he is entitled to the full benefits promised under the insurance policy.

Mayfield seeks punitive and compensatory damages of more than $75,000, plus interest and litigation costs. He is represented by attorneys Thomas M. Discon and Charlotte E. Discon of the Discon Law Firm in Mandeville.
