LAFAYETTE — A disabled man from Caddo Parish is suing a Shreveport shopping center operator, alleging failure to uphold to provide access for handicapped customers.

James Bledsoe filed a lawsuit April 15, in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana against Newport Properties LLC, alleging violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act in failing to remove discriminatory barriers to access the property.

According to the complaint, Bledsoe experienced serious difficulty accessing the goods and services offered at Towne Oak Square in Shreveport due to architectural barriers. The plaintiff alleges Newport Properties failed to provide accessible routes to the property, failed to remove excessive thresholds to the entrances, failed to mark accessible-designated parking spaces and failed to provide restrooms that are accessible and usable by individuals with disabilities.

Bledsoe seeks a trial by jury, declaration the property violates the ADA, an order directing the defendant to make the property accessible and usable by individuals with mobility disabilities, reasonable attorney fees, costs, expenses and such other relief as the court deems proper. He is represented by attorneys Andrew D. Bizer and Garret S. DeReus of The Bizer Law Firm in New Orleans.
