NEW ORLEANS — A Mississippi seaman is suing a barge owner, alleging insufficient measures were taken to prevent injuries.

Evans D. Cameron filed a lawsuit June 2 in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana against Baywater Drilling LLC, alleging negligence in failing to provide a safe place to work.

According to the complaint, on Jan. 9, Baywater's crane operator attempted to pick up a load on a pallet but the pallet swung loose, hitting Cameron, knocking him down on the pipe rack and pinning his foot between the pallet and timbers. This caused him to sustain injuries to his neck, back, right foot and other parties of his body, the lawsuit states.

As a result, the suit says, Cameron has endured physical pain and suffering, mental anguish, physical impairment, lost earnings and incurred medical expenses. The plaintiff alleges the defendant failed to follow reasonable and necessary safety precautions, failed to operate the crane properly and failed to perform the lift in a safe manner and failed to provide and failed to properly train the crew.

Cameron seeks trial by jury, judgment in excess of the minimum jurisdictional limits, pre-judgment and post-judgment interest, legal costs and all other relief to which he may be justly entitled. He is represented by attorney Steve Gordon of Gordon, Elias & Seely LLP in Houston.
