LAFAYETTE — A Shriever man is suing a Morgan City vessel owner, alleging its negligence caused a waterways crash that damaged the plaintiff's houseboat.

Sonny Giroir filed a lawsuit Aug. 11 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana Lafayette Division against C&R Contractors, Inc. alleging violation of the General Maritime Law.

According to the complaint, on Aug. 11, 2015, the C&R's vessel, M/V Captain Thomas was traversing the navigable waterways off Lake Palourde when it collided with Giror's moored houseboat. As a result of the collision, the suit says, Giror's vessel suffered property damages.

The plaintiff alleges the defendant failed to properly navigate its vessel, negligently operated the vessel at unsafe speed and failed to maintain proper lookout.

Giror seeks a trial by jury, monetary damages, costs of these proceedings, legal interest and for all other equitable and relief as the law may allow. He is represented by attorneys Joseph F. Gaar, Jr., Jason M. Welborn, Lucas S. Colligan and Jacob H. Hargett of Joseph F. Gaar Jr. APLC in Lafayette.
