LAFAYETTE – An African-American welder alleges his Broussard employer discriminated against him.

James W. Richard filed a complaint on Dec. 27 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana, Lafayette-Opelousas Division against GE Oil & Gas Drilling Services (Broussard Service Shop), part of GE Oil & Gas, a division of General Electric Co. alleging that the employer violated The Age Discrimination in Employment Act and the Civil Rights Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that he was subjected to discriminatory employment practices and was constructively discharged from his employment with the defendant. He alleges he was caused to suffer emotional distress, mental anguish, loss of earnings and loss of benefits. The plaintiff holds the defendant responsible because the defendant allegedly threatened and retaliated against him for complaining about allegedly discriminatory practices and subjected him to adverse employment practices with respect to the terms, conditions or privileges of employment.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks compensatory, liquidated and punitive damages, reinstatement, promotion, salary increase, attorney fees and costs and all other general and equitable relief. He is represented by Wanda Anderson Davis of Leefe, Gibbs, Sullivan, Dupre and Aldous LLC in Metairie and Jarvis Claiborne of Jarvis Claiborne, Attorney at Law in Opelousas.
