NEW ORLEANS – A Terrebonne Parish woman alleges a disposable cigarette lighter caused third-degree burns on her body.

Dorothy Hebert filed a complaint on April 17 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana against Wing Sale Inc. citing the Louisiana Product Liability Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that in Oct. 10, 2016, she was using a disposable cigarette lighter manufactured and distributed by defendant. As she attempted to use the lighter to light a cigarette, the suit states the light exploded, causing a large flame to erupt, and that plaintiff sustained third-degree burns all over her body. The plaintiff holds Wing Sale Inc. responsible because the defendant allegedly failed to provide adequate warnings regarding the hazards associated with the use of its cigarette lighter.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks compensatory damages, plus interest, costs of these proceedings and for all general and equitable relief to which she may be entitled. She is represented by Mary W. Riviere, Hunt B. Downer, David Pellegrin Jr. and Joseph L. Waitz III of Waitz and Downer in Houma.
