NEW ORLEANS (Louisiana Record) – Amite attorney Ronald B. Manning was reciprocally disbarred after a Sept. 14 Louisiana Supreme Court attorney disciplinary proceeding following his 2006 disbarment in Texas over a felony theft conviction.
Manning did not notify the office of disciplinary counsel in Louisiana of his disbarment in Texas and that office did not learn of those proceedings until this past April, according to the Louisiana Supreme Court's four-page attorney disciplinary proceeding. Professional conduct rules in Louisiana require an attorney to promptly notify the office of disciplinary counsel when they are disciplined by another state's disciplinary authority.
"In the instant case, (Manning) has made no showing of infirmities in the Texas disciplinary proceeding, nor do we discern any from our review of the record," the attorney disciplinary proceeding said. "Furthermore, we find there is no reason to deviate from the sanction imposed in Texas as only under extraordinary circumstances should there be a significant variance from the sanction imposed by the other jurisdiction."
Manning was admitted to the bar in Louisiana on Oct. 17, 1980, according to his state bar profile.
Manning was disbarred in June 2006 by the Texas Supreme Court following his conviction the previous September on a theft charge. Manning was sentenced to 28 years in prison, fined more than $10,000 and ordered to pay more than $1.2 million in restitution, according to the Texas Supreme Court's judgment of disbarment.
The Texas 14th Court of Appeals confirmed the conviction in September 2006. A search of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice does not list Manning as currently incarcerated.
