A Shreveport woman is seeking compensation alleging she was seriously injured by a Ninja Foodie pressure cooker that suddenly blew its top and exploded scalding-hot food all over her.

According to documents filed on March 16 in the Western District of Louisiana, plaintiff JoVanna Richard was using a pressure cooker manufactured by defendant SharkNinja Operating, LLC, on April 14, 2020. She says she was using the device in accordance with the owner's manual, but it still spontaneously exploded its lid, spraying hot contents onto her.

The suit alleges that the defendant markets the product as safe, claiming it has 14 safety features, including one that prevents the lid from dislodging until the cooker is completely depressurized.

The explosion caused serious burns to Richard's arms and breasts, she claims.

SharkNinja is faced with one count of product liability, and Richard seeks at least $75,000 in damages for her injuries.

Richard is represented by the Gertler Law Firm of New Orleans and Johnson Becker, PLLC, of St. Paul, Minn.
