NEW ORLEANS - Maria Cecilia Serrano filed a federal complaint on August 25 in the Eastern District of Louisiana against BP Exploration & Production for damages suffered while being a part of a clean-up crew of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in 2010.

According to Serrano, all injuries she obtained while cleaning up the site are the fault of BP. Serrano alleges BP purchased highly noxious oil dispersants from Nalco, and its subsidiary Corexit, that were sprayed from airplanes. Corexit is known for containing hazardous substances and being harmful to human health, the suit claims.

Serrano alleges that during her time of cleaning up the oil spill, she was exposed to oil, other hydrocarbons, chemical dispersants and other substances. Serrano was later diagnosed with Actinic Keratosis on February 9, 2017, the suit says.

Serrano was also diagnosed with Chronic Allergic Conjunctivitis, Mild Gastritis, Dry Eye Syndrome of Bilateral Lacrimal Glands, Shortness of Breath and Chronic Airway Obstruction most likely secondary to Reactive Airway Dysfunction between February 21 and 23, 2017, the suit claims.

Serrano is represented by The Downs Law Group.
