SHREVEPORT - Calvin Jackson, Sr., individually and on behalf of C.J., filed a federal lawsuit on Jan. 19 in the Western District of Louisiana against North Caddo Hospital Service District d/b/a North Caddo Medical Center.
According to the lawsuit, on Aug. 9, 2020, Calvin, Sr. and C.J. presented to the emergency room at North Caddo Medical Center for nausea and vomiting. C.J. was seen by Dr. Chandler, who ran tests and noted in C.J.'s chart that the ECG reading was “abnormal” and C.J. was “MR” or “mentally retarded," the suit says.
C.J. was prescribed medicine and released. On Aug. 10, 2020, C.J. was found on the floor barely breathing with a blood sugar level of 460 mg/dl and suffering from cardiac arrest, the suit says.
C.J. was taken to Willis Knighton-Bossier and admitted to the ICU where it was found C.J. was suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis with hypovolemic shock, the suit says. C.J. passed away on Aug. 15, 2020.
Jackson claims that North Caddo Medical Center failed to provide C.J. an appropriate medical screening examination within the capability of the hospital’s emergency department which could have saved C.J.'s life. Jackson further claims that Dr. Chandler had knowledge, based on the triage notes and Calvin Sr.’s statements, that C.J. had been vomiting for five days, was short of breath and had an abnormal ECG.
C.J. was caused to suffer physical pain and suffering, mental anguish, emotional trauma, loss of life, loss of enjoyment of life, lost chance of survival, and wrongful death.
Jackson seeks a judgment deemed reasonable by the court, plus cost of suit. Jackson is represented by William Boyles of Sangisetty Law Firm.
