Former Louisiana Supreme Clerk of Court, Frans J. Labranche, Jr., passed away on Friday, September 8, 2023, at the age of 89. Labranche dedicated over 18 years of his life to serving the high court, holding the position of clerk of court from 1978 to 1996, and working as a deputy clerk from 1977 to 1978.
Labranche's educational background was impressive, having earned his bachelor's degree from St. Joseph Seminary College and his juris doctor degree from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law in 1960. He also served as a Judge Advocate General for the United States Air Force for four years and continued as a reserve officer for the next decade. Prior to his appointment at the Louisiana Supreme Court, Labranche worked in private practice, gaining valuable experience in the field.
Throughout his career, Labranche was involved in various organizations and associations. He was a member of multiple Bar Associations, served on the St. Joseph Seminary Alumni Board, and held the positions of president in both the Loyola Alumni Association and the Loyola Law Alumni Association. He also contributed to the Loyola task force for legal education and taught Business Law as a lecturer at Loyola.
Labranche's professional achievements were recognized and honored with the St. Ives Award and the J.O Sentell Award for Leadership, in acknowledgment of his exceptional professional services and community engagement. He was an active member of local organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, and the Royal Order of the Hibernians. Additionally, Labranche served as a deacon at a church in Abita Springs and was appointed by Pope John Paul II as an Associate Judge of the Archdiocese of New Orleans Metropolitan Tribunal, a position he held until 2013.
Louisiana Supreme Court Clerk of Court, Veronica O. Koclanes, expressed her admiration for Labranche's service, stating, "His unwavering commitment to public service, tireless efforts to improve the operations of the Clerk's Office, and his legacy of professionalism have left an indelible mark on our Court."
Labranche is survived by his wife of 64 years, Delphine LeBourgeois, as well as his five children, twelve grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. His passing marks the end of a remarkable career and a life dedicated to public service.
