Property law scholar John Lovett has joined the faculty at the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center. He began his first semester teaching Civil Law and Common Law Property at LSU Law in Spring 2024.
“LSU Law is a very important institution in Louisiana and the United States,” said Lovett, a 1995 graduate of Tulane Law School. “I am thrilled to be joining the faculty and hope to contribute to the intellectual life of the law school.”
Lovett previously taught at Loyola University New Orleans College of Law where he held the position of De Van D. Daggett Jr. Distinguished Professor. He also served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Faculty Development for Loyola Law from 2012 to 2015. Lovett has previously taught courses in Civil Law Property, Louisiana Sale and Lease, Common Law Property, Land Use, and Real Estate Transactions
Property law is Lovett’s primary research interest. He has published articles and book chapters on many property and land use topics, including easements and servitudes, adverse possession and acquisitive prescription, community land trusts, land reform in Scotland, and the impact of natural disasters on property law and housing. His law review articles and book chapters have been published internationally and cited by scholars and courts all over the world. Lovett is also the co-author of Louisiana Property Law: The Civil Code, Cases, and Commentary (Carolina Academic Press), a widely used casebook in Louisiana.
Lovett has deep connections to the academic legal community in Scotland. He has lectured many times at the University of Edinburgh Law School, where he has been an Honorary Professor since 2020. In the spring of 2023, Lovett was a Glasgow Law Fellow at the University of Glasgow and a Visiting Professor at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. Lovett also serves as a member of the Land and Human Rights Advisory Forum for the Scottish Land Commission.
Lovett has also been very active in law reform initiatives in Louisiana and the United States. He served as Reporter for the Uniform Law Commission’s Drafting Committee for the Uniform Easement Relocation Act, a uniform act approved by the Uniform Law Commission in 2020 and adopted in four U.S. states.
