LSU Law students recently had the opportunity to sit in on live appellate oral arguments at both the state and federal level right here at the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center, thanks to visits from the First Circuit Court of Appeal and the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Chief Judge John Guidry and Judges Wayne Chutz (‘85) and Walter Lanier III (‘93) from the First Circuit presided over the docket on Feb. 26. Guidry and Lanier later participated in a panel presentation on Effective Appellate Advocacy with Administrative General Counsel for the First Circuit Court of Appeal Kacy Collins Thomas, attorney Marcus Plaisance (‘10) and Judge Jude Gravois (‘78). All first-year LSU Law students were required to observe the arguments as part of their legal writing course instruction.
On March 4-5, the Fifth Circuit heard oral arguments in the David Robinson Courtroom March 4-5. Judges presiding over the docket included Judge Carl E. Stewart, Judge Stuart Kyle Duncan (‘97), and Judge Kurt D. Englehardt (‘85). Students were also invited to observe the arguments. Hearings from the First Circuit and Fifth Circuit were also livestreamed in the McKernan Auditorium.
