With broad experience leading law students in the development of their academic and professional practice skills, as well as their preparation for the bar exam, Professor Carlota Toledo has joined the LSU Law faculty as a Professor of Professional Practice, effective May 1. She also serves as Director of Academic Success, a new position at the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center.
Toledo came to LSU Law from Nova Southern University (NSU) in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she served as a Professor of Practice in the Academic Success and Professionalism Program. Teaching legal skills and professional courses, Toledo worked closely with law students to self-assess and develop essential skills such critical reading, logical reasoning, and professional identity. She also served as a coach in the NSU Law Raising the Bar Program, wherein she mentored and advised recent graduates throughout their preparation for the bar exam.
“I was drawn to LSU Law because of the strong commitment to law student success demonstrated by the administration, faculty, and staff as well as the innovative curriculum and diverse co-curricular and extracurricular activities. I am excited to support my colleagues in the administration, faculty, and staff as we continue LSU’s mission to provide an excellent legal education and help prepare competent attorneys who will practice in Louisiana and beyond,” said Toledo. “I look forward to connecting with and supporting Law Center students and alums as they succeed academically and professionally while contributing my academic support expertise and efforts to this amazing legal institution.”
In her role as Director of Academic Success, Toledo will work to develop and implement a comprehensive Academic Success Program to assist students in their transition to law school, support them throughout their time at LSU Law, and prepare them to pass the bar exam on their first attempt.
“Professor Toledo is deeply committed to helping students excel,” said LSU Law Dean Alena Allen. “She has a strong vision for how to increase academic and bar passage support for students and I am excited to have her join the faculty.”
Toledo has more than 18 years of experience in student affairs, academic support, and advising in post-graduate and professional degree programs. Prior to her time at NSU, she worked with students at Indiana University School of Medicine, Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, and Michigan State University School of Law.
Along with being a founding member of the Association of Academic Support Educators (AASE), a national organization for law school academic support, Toledo is also a member of the Academic Support Section and Bar Passage Committee of the American Association of Law Schools (AALS), National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), and the Academic Support Network for the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC). She has presented at numerous national and regional legal education and academic support conferences on topics including academic support, bar preparation, curricular and co-curricular assessment, professional identity formation, and student engagement, among others.
Toledo earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago and her law degree from DePaul University College of Law.
