In a celebration of excellence and dedication to justice, the Center for African and African American Studies (CAAAS) at Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) will honor Southern University Law Center (SULC) professor Angela A. Allen-Bell with the prestigious Living Legends Award. The ceremony is scheduled for Friday, January 17, 2025, at 6 PM CST at the Millie Charles School of Social Work, 6801 Press Drive, SUNO, New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Living Legends Award, established in 2018 by Dr. Clyde Robertson, director of the CAAAS at SUNO, honors African Americans whose work has significantly impacted the city of New Orleans. Previous recipients include distinguished figures such as Fred J. Johnson, Jr., Keith C. Ferdinand, Jennifer Turner, Vera Warren-Williams, Anthony Bean, Marian Wright, and Malikh Rahim.

Professor Bell is a renowned legal scholar and activist with a distinguished career focused on the interplay between race and justice. Her research and advocacy have made significant impacts on legal reforms, most notably in successfully ending the use of non-unanimous juries in Louisiana in 2018. Allen-Bell played a pivotal role in advocating for legislation requiring unanimous jury verdicts in criminal trials in Louisiana state courts.

Throughout her illustrious career, professor Bell has been deeply involved in various historic advocacy campaigns. She contributed to the 50th Commemoration of Students United and the 1972 Southern University student movement. Her efforts extend to advocating for justice in the case of Vincent Simmons and supporting posthumous pardons, such as that of Homer Plessy. She is also a prolific author, with her recent book, "Under Indictment: Race, Juries and Justice in Louisiana," adding to her extensive list of scholarly contributions.

Professor Bell’s  activism extends beyond the academic realm. She has been featured in numerous national and international media outlets, including La Presse, Le Nouvel Observateur, MSNBC, CBS News, NBC Nightly News, National Public Radio, and The Washington Post, among others. Her leadership and expertise have earned her a place in the National Top 100 Lawyers and membership in exclusive organizations like the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation.

In recognition of her exceptional contributions, the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana commended Professor Allen-Bell for her achievements as a legal scholar. Her dedication to justice is encapsulated in her personal credo inspired by Jeremiah 5:1: "Give me one who seeks justice." This commitment is evident in her tireless efforts to dismantle racial hierarchies and reform oppressive systems.

As SUNO prepares to celebrate Angela A. Allen-Bell, the community is reminded of the enduring power of dedication, scholarship, and activism in the pursuit of justice. The event promises to be a momentous occasion, honoring a true champion for justice whose work continues to inspire and effect change.
