New Orleans Civil District Court Judge Piper Griffin
An Orleans Civil District Court jury ruled in favor of ta plaintiff who suffered a broken tooth and a torn rotator cuff after a dog attack in November 2007.
Cynthia Reeves was awarded $83,000, to be paid by George Grove and his insurer, Encompass Indemnity Insurance. The jury found that Grove was liable for Reeves' injuries when his three German shepherd dogs escaped his yard and attacked her while she was walking her dog.
New Orleans attorney David Oestreicher II represented Greeves.
New Orleans attorney Meri Hartley represented Groves.
Reeves was awarded $28,500 in past and future medical and dental expenses; $10,000 in past and future medical and dental disability; $30,000 in past and future physical pain and suffering; and $15,000 in past and future mental pain and suffering.
According to testimony, Groves' three dogs had a record of escaping his yard and roaming the surrounding neighborhood. On the day of the incident with Reeves, the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals quarantined the dogs. Groves later pled guilty to three counts of roaming at large in New Orleans Municipal Court on Jan. 30, 2008.
The suit, presided over by Judge Piper Griffin, came to a close May 12 after three days of testimony.
