USPS sued over carrier's collision with motorist

An Orleans Parish resident is suing the U.S. Postal Service after his vehicle was struck by a postal vehicle which allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign.

Alvin Caliste filed suit Feb. 25 in federal court in New Orleans. Caliste also names Postmaster General John R. Potter and postal worker Caretha Matthews, who was driving the USPS vehicle, as defendants.

The accident occurred on March 26, 2010 as Caliste was driving his vehicle on Franklin Avenue in New Orleans.

Caliste is asking for an award of $10,016 in general damages, $1,244 in property damages and $135 for loss of use of his vehicle.

Caliste is represented by Brian G. Birdsall of The Birdsall Law Firm in New Orleans.

U.S. District Judge A. J. McNamara is assigned to the case.
