Shipping company sued by worker who claims injury from ship striking barge

Glenn Lieberman

A man is suing a shipping company for injuries he says he sustained when the ship he was working on struck a barge.

William Frederick filed an admiralty suit in Orleans Parish Civil District Court Plaintiff on Dec. 6 against Turn Service, LLC.

Frederick claims he suffered serious injuries to neck, back, body and mind as a result of captain of Turn Services-owned vessel, Jean Lafitte, be allowed to strike a barge.

The suit asserts Turn Services was negligent for allowing the vessel to be in an unseaworthy condition, failing to provide a reasonable, safe and adequate place to work and failing to provide adequate instruction, personnel and equipment.

An unspecified amount in damages sought covers mental anguish and physical suffering, medical care expenses, expenses for transportation to and from health care providers, loss of earnings and impaired earning capacity, loss of enjoyment of life and feelings of economic insecurity. The suit asks that damages include penalties and attorney's fees and be paid from date of Frederick's injury until he recovers.

The suit was filed by Glenn Lieberman, of New Orleans-based Morris Bart, LLC. on behalf of Frederick.

The case has been assigned to Division E Judge Madeleine M. Landrieu.
