Shipping company sued for deckhand's alleged back injuries

DONALDSONVILLE – A Jefferson Parish man is suing an Ascension Parish-based shipping company for back injuries he claims to have received while working.

Toriano Jordan filed suit against River Ventures, LLC in the 23rd Judicial District Court on June 14.

Jordan claims that while he was working as a deckhand for the defendant, the captain of his ship struck a barge that resulted in the plaintiff being violently thrust over a table and resulted in injuries. The plaintiff alleges he suffered severe and debilitating injuries to his lower back and extremities in the incident.

The defendant is accused of breach of legally imposed duty of reasonable care, failing to provide a safe work environment, failing to provide safe means to perform work activities, failing to properly train and supervise employees and operating vessel at too fast a speed.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for physical pain and suffering, mental pain and suffering, loss of wage earning capacity, loss of wages, loss of enjoyment of life and disfigurement.

Jordan is represented by Baton Rouge-base attorney Aub A. Ward.

The case has been assigned to Division E Judge Alvin Turner, Jr.
