Deckhand files Jones Act lawsuit against Florida company

NEW ORLEANS - A Jones Act lawsuit has been filed against a Florida company after a deckhand injured his back while moving equipment.

Rickey Stephens filed suit against Florida Marine Transporters Inc. on July 18 in federal court in New Orleans.

The alleged incident occurred on Oct. 23, 2011 as Stephens was working as a deckhand and crew member of the Chris Pike, a tug boat owned by the defendant. Stephens states he suffered serious injuries while moving and replacing hydraulic cylinders.

The plaintiff is asking the court for an award of damages for mental and physical pain and suffering, permanent disability, loss of wages, impairment of earning capacity, medical expenses, punitive damages, maintenance and cure, court costs, interest, and attorney's fees.

Stephens is represented by New Orleans attorneys Laurence E. Best and Cristin D. Morneau.

U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo is assigned to the case.
