Shopper sues Wal-Mart after slipping in liquid in cereal aisle

NEW ORLEANS - A St. John the Baptist Parish woman has filed a lawsuit against Wal-Mart that claims she injured her knee when she slipped in liquid in the cereal aisle.

Tanya Gaspard filed suit against Wal-Mart Louisiana and their insurance carrier XYZ Insurance Co. on Sept. 6 in St. John the Baptist Parish District Court. The defendant removed the case to federal court in New Orleans on Sept 27.

The alleged incident occurred on June 3, 2012 as Gaspard was shopping at Wal-Mart in LaPlace. She states the incident caused her to injure her right knee and ankle.

The defendant is accused of failing to take precautions, failing to warn Gaspard of the liquid substance on the floor and for not removing the liquid substance off the floor prior to the accident.

The plaintiff is seeking damages for pain and suffering, mental anguish, medical expenses, interest, and court costs.

Gaspard is represented by Robert M. Becnel of Law Offices of Robert M. Becnel in LaPlace.

U.S. District Judge Kurt D. Engelhardt is assigned to the case.
