GRETNA – An Illinois woman whose sister was an in-patient at a Jefferson Parish hospital is suing over her sister’s death following a fall on the hospital’s premises.

Mary Lee Myers, individually and on behalf of the estate of Mary Louise Dedaux, filed suit against Jefferson Parish Hospital District No. 2 and East Jefferson General Hospital in the 24th Judicial District Court. Myers claims her sister Mary Louise Dedaux was a patient at the hospital on June 7 when she was left unattended and fell while walking to the bathroom.

The defendant is accused of failing to satisfy the standard of care for a geriatric patient, failing to use reasonable care, failing to properly train employees and failing to properly assess patients for risk of falls.

An unspecified amount in damages is sought for pain and suffering, medical expenses, mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of life, diminished chance of survival and premature and unnecessary death.

On behalf of herself Myers is seeking damages for loss of her sister, wrongful demise of her sister, loss of companionship of her sister and extreme mental anguish and distress.

Myers is represented by Robert J. Caluda of the Metairie-based The Caluda Law Firm.

The case has been assigned to Division I Judge Nancy A. Miller.

Case no. 721-070.
